GEM Motoring Assist Road Safety Charity
About the charity
GEM has been supporting road safety initiatives since it was founded in 1932. Since 1985, the GEM Road Safety Charity has provided financial support for a huge number of schemes throughout the UK. The charity has a board of registered trustees that receives requests for assistance and, following recommendations from the Guild’s Executive Council, allocates financial assistance to schemes it feels are worthwhile and effective in road safety terms.
How we help
The Charity Trustees meet regularly through the year to consider requests for assistance from organisations large and small. One recipient is the Parliamentary Advisory Committee for Transport Safety (PACTS), who received a grant to assist with mobility research in older drivers. “GEM’s support for our work over the years has enabled us to make a real contribution to raising the research capability of road safety,” said PACTS Executive Director Robert Gifford.
The Charity has sponsored local authority road safety initiatives and drama workshops, as well as a variety of specific research projects. Funding has also been allocated for updates and printing of the range of road safety information leaflets provided free of charge by GEM Motoring Assist.

Volvo is world-renowned for its commitment to vehicle safety – but that’s no less than you’d expect from the company that invented the three-point seatbelt, now a standard feature of every car on sale. Its commitment to pioneering safety systems continues to this day, with the latest models all featuring innovative technologies designed to protect what’s most important of all – people.
Designing cars around humans – be they passengers or pedestrians – has led to the introduction of cars like the stylish S60 saloon and versatile V60 estate. Both feature Volvo’s sophisticated City Safety and Pedestrian Detection technologies, which can help the driver avoid an accident altogether in certain circumstances, thanks to its automatic braking capability.
